The history of Kasama-yaki dates back in the Edo era(AD1772-1781). Kunohanemon in Hakoda village started pottery using the kettle with the guide of Nagaemon (a potter in Shigaraki).
During the Edo era, it received protection of the lord of Shigaraki Kasama.
Until the Meiji era, it has been developed taking the advantage of the distance to Edo (Tokyo).
In the Kanto region, Kasama-yaki is as famous as Mashiko-yaki in Tochigi prefecture.
Every year from April 29 to May 5, there is a big event held known as “Himatsuri”.
Many of the ceramic artists gather to the event hall with a variety of pieces.

笠間焼の歴史は江戸時代中期、安永年間（1772～1781年）から始まります。箱田村（現在の笠間市箱田）の久野半右衛門が、信楽の陶工・長右衛門の指導で焼き物を始め、窯を築いたとされています。
江戸時代には笠間藩主の保護を受け、幕末から明治期にかけて江戸（東京）に近い利点を生かし発展してきました。
関東では栃木県の益子焼と並ぶ大きな産地として有名です。
毎年、4/29～5/5に開催される『陶炎祭－ひまつり－』は大規模なイベントで、多くの陶芸家・窯元・地元販売店などが、笠間芸術の森公園イベント広場に集い個性豊かな店作りと作品でお客様をお迎えいたします。
